Class Descriptions
Mindful Yoga for Everyday Healing is a powerful synthesis of ancient stretching, balancing and healing techniques. It enhances the energy in each chakra, or center of spiritual power, balancing emotions, mind and soul while transforming the body. The techniques emphasize moving the body in a way that is highly respectful of challenged joints, muscles, organs and other body structures. To move in this respectful way, mindfulness is utilized. Traditionally yoga was taught in a very mindful way, gently exploring our many facets of being with compassion, non-judgement and grounded awareness.
Mindfulness continues to be proved by current scientific research to affect positive changes in our cells, tissues, organs, chakras, meridians and relationships. This non-violent spiritual approach to wellness can't help but have a positive effect on the larger community; as we mindfully balance the power dynamic within ourselves, this resonates out to the larger community. This class is an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half long, weaving yoga movement, postures and flows with meditation practice, breathing and deep relaxation. You will leave refreshed and ready to connect and create within the world again. Tuesday at 7pm, Wednesday at 10:30am and Saturday at 8:45am. This class is held at 1600 Harrison Avenue (call 914-420-2523 to register as space is limited; most classes are full at present). Ayurvedic Yoga explores the sacred elements of creation: earth, water, fire, air and ether, and how they weave the doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. We explore the cultivation of sacred qualities and balance seemingly polarized opposites so we can have more healthy power as we live in balance with the natural cycles. Fridays at 10:30am.
Belly Dance is a powerful shamanic movement journey through the elements of creation. It is a practice that will empower you to realize your dreams, energize, stay in shape, as well as have fun. If you are already a student of belly dance this class will provide a fresh, spiritual, improvisational aspect. If you are a beginner, it is a good introduction to this ancient, shamanic art of the body, emotions, mind and spirit. This class is held some Saturdays at 2:00or 2:30pm. See homepage for most current time. (When this workshop is held at 1600 Harrison Avenue):The fee by donation for this monthly workshop. The Medicine Wheel Ceremony group is held on some Saturdays at 3:00 or 3:30pm (see home page for specific dates and times as this may vary), praying for all Beings and passing the talking stick, providing a safe, powerful space for us to support each other in our process and soul's journey so we can bring the deep, sacred knowledge that emerges from us, to this culture in dire need of deep knowledge and wisdom at this time. The emergence and assertion of feminine wisdom and healthy masculinity will create the much needed paradigm shift in our society, resulting in greater respect and care for all beings and spirits everywhere. We will begin by honoring the Grandmothers/Grandfathers and our inner elder and exploring the medicine wheel, all the elements, stages of life, challenges and power as we express our reflections, questions, needs and deep wisdom. Activities may include meditation, shamanic journey, sacred movement and ceremony. I offer the space for this circle as an opportunity to nurture yourself in the process of growth. Join us on some Saturdays at 3:30pm, posted on home page. Please call for further information. (When this group is held at 1600 Harrison Avenue it is in exchange for donations.): Donations ($5 to $50 suggested, do not let financial struggles keep you from coming) are accepted in exchange for the facilitation of this group and more than 50% of donations collected are passed to Changing Winds, My Sister's Place, Democracy Now, Heifer and other community and global organizations.
Tiokasin Ghosthorse has written,
"We must relearn how to be men in a non-patronizing
manner, in a non-matronizing manner so there remains
a balance
A place where nobody hides their hearts."
Grandmother Agnes says, "It is my hope that the Grandmother's Council will have a mushroom effect throughout the world. That women will start circling up, come together, and bond together, to help one another be better and stand tall with their voices, to say they've had enough of oppression. It is my hope that they will form matriarchal bridges with each other and be a voice again for our Mother Earth and Her children. The women can hear the cries for help. The elders need to teach the young women to take care of their bodies and walk a good path in life to ensure a good future. Help from the Spirit World for this work is always close at hand."
